Viagra
Viagra was introduced in 1998 and had $1.68 billion in sales last
year. The impotence drug has been used by 23 million men worldwide.
There are a growing number of cases where men are allegedly losing
their vision due to a condition called nonarteritic anterior ischemic
optic neuropathy (NAION) while taking Viagra. There are also reports
of intraocular pressure, retinal vascular disease and other eye complications.
The drug's label currently has warnings about possible side effects
involving eyesight, such as increased sensitivity to light or blurred
vision.
Cialis
Cialis (tadalafil) is a similar impotence drug produced by Eli Lilly.
One of the main differences of Cialis is that it may work for up to
36 hours after taking the dosage. This has made Cialis a strong competitor
for Viagra. There are also a number of cases of men allegedly losing
their vision while taking Cialis. The US Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) is currently investigating these Cialis cases.
Levitra
Levitra is a prescription medicine manufactured by Bayer AG and GlaxoSmithKline
that is also used to treat erectile dysfunction. Levitra is available
in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg tablets. The drug is intended to
be taken only when needed, but no more than once per day. The FDA
is also contacted the manufacturers of Levitra in case there is a
problem with the entire class of erectile dysfunction medication.
Viagra Class Action Filed
On June 6, 2005 a class action lawsuit was filed by the law offices
of Ronnie Penton and Greg Jones & Associates on behalf of Texas residents
against Pfizer on NAION (Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy)
allegedly caused by Viagra (Sildenafil).
Plaintiffs were unaware of alleged side effects in which a drop in
blood pressure restricts the flow of oxygenated blood to the optic
nerve causing irreversible vision loss and blindness.
In the News
U.S. consumer group Public Citizen contends drugs to treat erectile
dysfunction need stronger warnings on their packaging about the risk
of blindness. They claim the U.S. Food and Drug Administration should
"immediately add a black box warning regarding the risks of drug-induced
blindness for the three phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors that
are prescribed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction." (Oct-23-05)
